Refillable vs Prefilled Pods: Which Pod System Is Right for You?
Every pod vape falls into one of two categories: refillable, where you top up an empty pod with your own e-liquid, or prefilled, where the pod arrives already filled and is swapped for a new one when it's empty. Both work well, but they suit different habits, budgets and levels of hands-on involvement. Here's how to work out which one fits you.

The basic difference
A refillable pod system is a device with an empty pod or tank that you fill yourself from a bottle of e-liquid, usually through a small fill port on the side or top. When it's empty you refill it rather than replace it, though the coil inside still wears out and needs changing on its own schedule.
A pre-filled pod system uses pods that are filled and sealed at the factory. There's no bottle, no fill port and no measuring. You use a pod until it's empty, then click in a new one. Since 17 June 2025, disposable vapes are banned in New Zealand, so every pre-filled pod vape we sell is a rechargeable device with replaceable pods.

Refillable pods: more control, lower running cost
Refillable systems give you the most flexibility. You choose the e-liquid, flavour and nicotine strength every time you fill up, and you can switch whenever you like without buying a new device. Because you buy e-liquid by the bottle rather than by the pod, the cost per mL is usually lower over time.
The trade-off is a bit more upkeep: you need e-liquid on hand, you fill the pod yourself, and you change coils when the flavour starts to fade or taste burnt. None of this is difficult once you've done it a few times. Pre-filled pods: simple and consistent
Pre-filled pod systems suit people who want to pick a flavour and go. There's nothing to fill or measure, and no e-liquid on your hands. Each pod is sealed and filled at the factory, so flavour and strength stay consistent from pod to pod.

Flavour and nicotine strength options
Refillable systems generally offer more choice. You can use any compatible e-liquid, including nic salts and freebase, and change as often as you like. Pre-filled pods are more limited by design, so if you want a particular strength, check the range before choosing a device that only takes that brand's pods. Which one fits your habits?
If you vape through the day, like to change flavours often or want lower running costs, a refillable pod kit is usually the better long-term fit. If you'd rather not deal with bottles, filling or coil changes, or you want the simplest setup, a pre-filled system removes most of that.

Not really. Filling takes a few seconds once you've done it a couple of times. The main extra task is changing the coil every so often.
