How Long Should a Vape Coil Last? Signs It's Time to Replace Yours
Coils are consumables — no vape coil lasts forever, and running one too long doesn't just cost you flavour, it can turn a good device into a harsh, burnt-tasting experience. The question most vapers actually want answered is simple: how do you know when it's time to swap yours out? Here's what actually determines coil life and the signs to watch for.
How long should a coil actually last?
There's no single fixed number, but as a general guide most coils last somewhere between one and three weeks of regular use, depending heavily on the device, the e-liquid, and how often you're vaping. Pod system coils (in devices like the Caliburn, XROS, or a prefilled pod vape) tend to sit at the shorter end of that range, especially when used constantly through the day. Sub-ohm tank coils in higher-wattage mods can sometimes stretch a little longer if they're well looked after, but they also degrade faster under high power. Think of the range as a starting point, not a rule — your own usage will tell you more than any number on a box.
What actually wears a coil out
A vape coil is a small heating element wrapped around (or built into) a wicking material, usually cotton, that soaks up e-liquid and gets vaporised when the coil heats up. Every time you vape, that heating cycle slowly builds up residue on the coil — burnt sugars from the e-liquid, trace buildup from flavourings, and general carbon deposits. Higher sweetness or thicker e-liquids tend to gunk up a coil faster than simpler formulations. Higher wattage devices also age coils faster, since more heat means faster breakdown of both the wick and the coil itself. Chain vaping (taking puffs back-to-back without letting the wick re-saturate) is one of the quickest ways to shorten coil life, because the wick can't keep up and starts to scorch.
Signs it's time to replace your coil
A few clear signals tell you a coil is done, well before it fails completely:
Burnt or harsh taste: the most obvious sign. If your usual e-liquid suddenly tastes acrid, scorched, or just "off," the wick has likely dried out or the coil has built up carbon. This is the number one reason vapers replace a coil.
Reduced flavour or noticeably weaker vapour: a coil nearing the end of its life often produces flatter flavour and thinner vapour, even with a fresh fill of e-liquid.
Gurgling or leaking: when the wick struggles to absorb e-liquid evenly, you can get liquid pooling and leaking through the airflow, or a wet gurgling sound when you inhale.
Discolouration: if you can see the coil and it looks dark or crusted rather than clean, that's built-up residue affecting performance.
You have to vape harder to get the same hit: a tired coil often needs longer or harder draws to deliver the same throat hit and vapour it used to give effortlessly.
How to make a coil last longer
You can't make a coil last forever, but a few habits stretch its useful life. Priming a new coil properly before first use (letting it soak in e-liquid for a few minutes rather than vaping it dry) prevents an early burnt hit and protects the wick from day one. Avoiding chain vaping gives the wick time to re-saturate between puffs. Keeping your tank or pod topped up, rather than running it near empty, stops the wick from drawing air instead of e-liquid, which is one of the fastest ways to scorch a coil. And matching your e-liquid to your device (freebase for sub-ohm tanks, nic salts for pod systems) helps too, since the wrong combination can cause more residue buildup and uneven vaporisation.
When in doubt, replace it
Coils are inexpensive compared to the device they go in, and vaping on a worn-out coil is rarely worth it — the harsh taste alone is usually enough reason to swap it out.
